Neha Kumari

She is a young woman who continued her education with Ashayen until she was 25 years old. She came to the Centre at the age of 7 years in the sitting position, unable to walk, stand, speak, or sit. She was dependent on her mother for using the toilet and wearing clothes, but now she can do both herself. Her parents are educated, and with a father working in the Ordinance Factory, her parents brought her to us at a young age. She used to be crying all the time due to discomfort and was unable to speak. She was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy with ATNR (Asymmetrical Titanic Nerve Reflexes). With this condition, one hand would always be in the air while performing any activity. She was the 4th and the last child in her family with all other siblings being normal and have now become engineers and cooperate and help Neha. With physiotherapy, she began walking and had to have a helmet on. She faltered at first and gradually gained confidence. As she progressed, the helmet was removed. She had near to normal intelligence but was unable to write due to poor hand-eye coordination. With continued training, physiotherapy and her perseverance she completed high school education with the help of a Writer. She can type on the computer and speaks and understands English and Hindi. What is amazing is her ability to remember the teacher’s and physiotherapists’ birthdays even when their own family may forget! She makes a card each year for them. Neha enjoys drawing and painting and we have printed her artwork on our cards.

We are proud!

Many of our children have done well for themselves. There are those like Sandeep Sonkar who was trained for weaving at the centre found a job at a weaver’s company and is making mats and dusters. He is married now. Sanjay Tiwari learnt money concepts in the centre and is helping his father in his hardware shop. And many such students are making themselves useful and contributing citizens in society. Then there is Manish Kumar who was a good singer and earns from singing in a Bhajan Mandali. There are many others, we are proud to say who have benefited.
